POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of a principal, the Media Specialist performs library related services.  The position is responsible for establishing policies and procedures for the efficient operation of the media center.     

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Planning with the principal to support total school instructional program;

Planning with teachers for the integration of media skills with classroom content;

Arranging schedules and supervising the daily operation of the media center; 

Searching for standard reference materials, including online sources and the Internet, to answer questions;

Analyzing requests to determine needed information, and assisting in furnishing or locating that information;

Teaching students to search for information using databases;

Keeping records of circulation and materials;

Budgeting, planning, and maintaining personnel records;

Checking books in and out of the library;

Explaining the use of library facilities, resources, equipment, and services, and providing information about library policies;

Reviewing and evaluating resource materials in order to select and order print, audiovisual, and electronic resources within county guidelines;

Coding, classifying, and cataloging books, publications, films, audiovisual aids, and other library materials based on subject matter or standard library classification systems;

Locating unusual or unique information in response to specific requests;

Troubleshooting and performing minor maintenance and repairs of audio-visual equipment;

Receiving and responding to inquiries, requests for assistance, concerns and complaints in areas of responsibility;

Performing general office work as necessary, including preparing reports and records, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, sending and receiving faxes and e-mails, answering the telephone, ordering supplies and materials; and

Attending training, meetings, workshops and seminars as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Ability to work effectively with students, parents, administrators, colleagues, community, and other school system staff;

Ability to work with diverse populations;

Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education;

Ability to infuse technology into curriculum;

Proficient computer skills in Microsoft, Windows, Power Point and EXCEL with spreadsheet experience and knowledge of Internet and e-mail;

Excellent human relations and collaboration skills;

Effective oral and written communication skills;

Knowledge of school organization, goals and objectives, curriculum, teaching techniques, current trends, research, and materials of instruction in field of specialization;

Excellent knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning process;

Lifting and transportation of training materials and equipment is required; and

Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Master's degree in School Library Media that included student teaching or a practicum from a program at an institute of higher education OR; Master's degree from a program that would lead to State certification as a library media specialist or a comparable position as determined by the State Department of Education OR; and Equivalent requirements for Maryland State Department of Education certification as a Library Media Specialist.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Holds or is eligible for a Professional Certificate appropriate to area of assignment issued by the Maryland State Department of Education.
